Candidate search

Through qualitative and quantitative research we knew users faced difficulties navigating and accessing relevant candidate information.

An intuitive search function with address input, improved the experience and allowed users to locate candidates they could vote for in their local board.

Additionally, users wanted a way to easily compare candidates’ views on important topics to help inform their decision in local elections. By adding the show/hide functionality to their search results for key campaign topics, users could quickly compare candidates views without having to navigate away from the search results page.

Compared to the 2019 elections unique views on the Candidate search page increased by 31% and 164% on the Candidate profiles.

Summary:

Improved the candidate search journey and functionality to help users find relevant information - helping to inform their vote.

Elected members declaration form

Elected members and our business partners need to create a declaration form that would simplify the process for members to declare interests, but also for internal users allowing us to create an output of the information for that is visible to the public. Discovery showed that the previous form contained a few issues:

  • users often had to input the same declarations as the year (i.e. property owned) - this was time consuming

  • users couldn’t update and edit information within the same year and/or if information from a previous year had changed.

  • the form design was outdated and didn’t match our current design system and branding

  • with 20 plus questions (and some that may not be relevant) multiple pages to click through, go back and edit/review was a daunting task

The team implemented auto-save functionality so that no information was ever lost if a user left the online form. Based on user feedback we included functionality to import previous year’s interests to help save time.

Creating a single-page form allowed users to easily scan all questions and answer questions. They could now add, edit and review entries without needed to go back multiple times.

In order to simplify the UI, I incorporated the use of modals to capture the data needed when a user had an interest to declare and once saved was displayed in a table on the form page. This gave users visibility of their inputs just by scrolling up and down the page.

Summary:

Designed an online form for elected members to make declarations of interests - improving the process through features including: import, add, edit, and remove items.
